York: Wiley & Putnam; J. P. Wright, Printer, 1838.FIRST EDITION. 12mo. [i-vii] viii-ix [2 blank], [1-3] 4-215 pages. Folding frontispiece lithographed map titled Texas, 1838. Lith. By Baker. Original dark brown embossed cloth, spine gilt-lettered.
Born in Massachusetts, Newell (1803-1892) came to Texas in 1837 and remained about one year. His account, one of the few that describes Texas during the Republic era, is widely admired and valued for the evenhandedness and impartiality of his approach to the subject. The work is especially valuable because of the details it contains about the Texas Revolution, many of which Newell was the first to report, after having persuaded Sam Houston to confide in him. The appendices, which occupy approximately half the book, cover various topics concerning Texas, such as advice to emigrants, springs, rivers, viticulture, sericulture, morals, and stock raising. Appendix No. 7 gives a very early printed version the names of those killed at the Alamo. The publication of this book impoverished Newell, and he had to resort to purchasing copies from his publisher at fifty cents and reselling them for one dollar.
The frontispiece map depicts Texas and Louisiana, identifying major rivers, cities, and railroad lines. Baker also points out the Alamo, only two years after the infamous massacre at the fort by Santa Anna.
Jenkins writes, "This is one of the earliest books published about Texas after it became a republic. The history it presents is second-hand and sometimes perfunctory, but the quotations from participants are of considerable historical value. The descriptive portions add much to our knowledge of the early republic... The work begins with an excellent summary of Mexican history from 1821 to 1835, followed by a sketch of Texas history from 1832 to 1835, ending with Cos' retreat from San Antonio. The events of 1836 are described, including quotations from participating Texans and from previously published Mexican accounts, such as Almonte's diary. The account is pro-Texan throughout, but more objective than many other contemporary Anglo-American versions.
Raines writes, "One of the rare and reliable books on Texas, founded on official documents and information obtained from President Houston, Gen. Lamar, Gen. F. Huston, Col. Poe, Col. Ward, Col. Neil, and Capt. Shackleford."
Condition: Spine ends and corners worn, upper joint split with backstrip starting to detach, horizontal tear on backstrip near head. Slight discoloration to pastedowns, light foxing to text. Map is lightly toned, mostly at edges.
