Description
"A prime source for the massacre of Fannin's men at Goliad" --Eberstadt
Jose Urrea. Diario de las operaciones militares de la
division que al mando del General Jose Urrea hizo la campaña de
Tejas. Publicalo su autor con algunas observaciones para
vindicarse ante sus conciudadanos. Victoria de Durango:
Imprenta del Gobierno a cargo de Manuel Gonzalez, 1838.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 139 pages. Original grey printed wrappers. Housed in a full morocco clamshell case.
Considered by Streeter as one of the top ten Mexican imprints for a Texas collection, this book offers important insight into General Urrea's military operations, and in this privately printed work he provides a detailed description of the massacre at Goliad. Urrea criticizes his predecessor, General Vicente Filisola, and firmly blames Santa Anna for Goliad.
"Written by the perpetrator of the Goliad massacre, this is a fundamental work on the Texas Revolution... It is true that only a handful of copies of Urrea's Diario have survived, and apparently none got to Texas at an early date" (Jenkins).
Raines writes, "In this journal of his military operations in Texas Urrea seeks to vindicate himself before his fellow citizens. The butcher of Goliad, under Santa Anna's order."
Condition: Evidently disbound from a tract volume, preserving both cover wrappers (front wrapper short along fore-edge), spine renewed, some staining, some repairs to ornament border supplied in facsimile, and top edges stained red from original binding volume. Minor spotting to fore-edge of text block. Internally fine.
