Touching Letter Archive and Ambrotype of a Brave North Carolinian Killed In Action. Reflecting the hopes, thoughts and fears of the Confederate soldier is this collection of letters from and about Lt. Thomas Henry Riddle, Co. C, 60th North Carolina Vol. Infantry. The grouping, apparently kept by his parents, consists of thirty-five war-dated letters including a scarce "Soldier's Discharge" for Riddle after one year's service with the 16th North Carolina Volunteers and a handwritten "General Order" dated May 2, 1863 promoting him Second Lt. of Co. C, 60th North Carolina Volunteers. Around a dozen letters are from Riddle and others from friends and family members. They all appear to be addressed to Riddle's parents in Henderson Co., North Carolina and many have battle content. Some are on poor quality, colored Confederate paper and a number of them retain their original envelopes. One is written to Riddle's father by his Captain, Thomas Patton, announcing the mortal wounding of his son by an exploding shell "while nobly performing his duty" at Rocky Face Ridge, Ga. on Feb. 25, 1864. One letter in the set is from Riddle's uncle, Lt. J. A. Riddle of the 3rd South Carolina Volunteers, dated July 29, 1863 discussing the "big battle in pennsylvania" they were in and naming some of the dead in his company. Thomas Riddle's letters touch on everything from the mundane part of soldiering ("times is hard here now we don't gite enny things to eat"), to the exciting ("there has been a regular rore of cannons all day today at vixburg"). Most are written in ink and easy to read despite the phonetic spelling.With the letters are a ninth plate ambrotype of an unidentified young woman and a sixth plate ambrotype of Riddle in uniform. The image has been struck by something and a large spiderweb crack emanates from one side. Visible through the damage is a seated view of a young bearded man in a single breasted gray Confederate jacket. In all, a scarce group of letters that tell a very personal story of the South in the Civil War.
