Description

Without question one of the rarest Civil War Confederate CDVs extant.

An Identified Confederate Carte de Visite Portrait of Two Officers of the Virginia State Navy. Both officers wear double breasted frock coats with rolled collars, a single bullion cuff stripe and fringed epaulettes, which are devoid of insignia. Both officers also with sword belts with circular two piece style plates. While the image is bright and crisp the resolution is simply not good enough to determine the device on the waist belt plates or buttons. The officer on the left, which the period pencil ID on verso identifies as Purser D. D. Talley, wears a regulation style naval officer's cap with bullion band at the base and bearing the insignia of VN above two stars inside a wreath. Talley also wears a classic Confederate dolphin head naval officer's sword suspended from his belt. The officer at the right, identified as Engineer Edward Archer, exhibits the same VN insignia above an old English E inside the wreath on his cap, with an 1852 pattern naval officer's sword suspended from his belt. The image bears the backmark of "Mayall Photo. London & Brighton. Very fine condition, just one small spot, apparently on the negative, on Talley's face, and a light pencil line where the image was once housed in a mat. Bright and crisp. Accompanied by four other images of members of Talley's family, also accompanied by interesting history. An incredibly rare Civil War image and the only portrait of officers from this short lived Confederate naval organization known to exist.
