Description

Imperial Albumen Photo of Gen. Abner Doubleday and Philadelphia Courts-Martial Commission. Taken in the winter-spring of 1865, this impressive image depicts the General Courts- Martial Commission appointed by the War Department's Adjutant General's Office in February, 1865, headed by famed Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday. The court was charged to meet at Philadelphia on February 3, 1865, "for the trial of such prisoners as might be brought before it." The photo itself measures 18" x 11¼" and is housed in a period wooden frame with inner gilt trim measuring 25¼" x 19¼". The image features Doubleday and nine high ranking officers posing against a traditional studio background of pillar and curtain. The image is clear and clean with only some insignificant white flaking along the upper edge and lower portion. There is also some minor soiling to the mat and gilt under-edge of the frame. The original photographer has touched up some portions of the image, mainly on the floor and the background. Seven of the ten sitters have been identified by photo historian Roger Hunt and that list is included with the image. Along with Doubleday, they include John A. Foster, Charles C. Cresson, Garrick Mallery, James McLean Thomson, George Thompson and Francis Keese. An important and historic view.
