Description
Very Rare, Superb Condition, Wilson's Patent Breech Loading Rifle with matching serial number cutlass bayonet, as imported by the Confederate Naval Yard at Charleston, South Carolina. .54 caliber, 49" overall with 33" barrel. The is the exact gun and bayonet extensively photographed and described in Firearms From Europe by Noe, Yantz and Whisker. Lock dated 1860, crown behind hammer. The top of the breech assembly marked "T. Wilson's/ Patent". "A84" with inspector's initials "T. W." on top of breech which also displays proof marks with number 30. Right side of the butt stock die stamped "CSN" enclosing "A84". Mechanically perfect, mint bore, all metal retains approximately 50% of the original blue and case colors the balance smooth with colors just fading. Wood excellent with deep rich patina and just a few storage dents/scratches. Even retains an original correct Confederate linen sling and nipple protector on brass chain.The original cutlass bayonet is 32½" overall with a 26¾" blade. Black checkered composition grips. Marked overall with several English proofs and "CKC" on the ricasso. Numbered "A84" on the reverse pommel, matching it to the gun. All metal smooth and bright with the exception of the interior of the cup, which is painted black, and appears to be original. Grips show some honest wear but bayonet and scabbard overall near perfect. A remarkable example of this most rare Confederate Navy longarm with only two other examples known to exist.
