Description

[Terry's Texas Rangers] Letter from Private J. E. Bartlett of the 8th Texas Cavalry to his Father just before the Battle of Shiloh. Two pages, front and verso, 8" x 12½", March 28, 1862, [Corinth] Mississippi, on blue lined paper. Bartlett, a trooper in Company "C" of perhaps the most famous Texas unit in the Confederate Army, writes his father of the campaign that brought them to Mississippi-Tennessee border, "We have rode both day and night in the snow and rain, and slept on the wet ground or in the snow without tents or house to protect us from the weather. We slept with our horses saddled and our arms under our heads."

"The Yanks", Bartlett writes, "are getting the upper hand of us. We were whipt[sic] at [Fort] Donelson and we have lost Gen. McCullouch [Ben McCulloch], who was killed a short time back in Missouri and several other officers. The Yanks have possession of Nashville." Bartlett laments the loss of the city, "I was sorry to leave that place, for we were treat [sic] so kind by the people".

"We are encampt [sic] at Corinth in the state of Miss., though, are expected [sic] a big fight near this place. There are a great many troops concentrating at this point. We have some 110 regiments at this place." A few days after writing this letter, Bartlett, the other troopers in Terry's Texas Rangers, and over 44,500 fellow Confederate troops would march into battle a few miles across the Tennessee border at a place called Shiloh. Bartlett closes his letter, "Yours until death". Sold with a copy of Our Trust is in the God of Battles edited by Thomas W. Cutrer, in which this letter is quoted extensively; and, a copy of None but Texians: A History of Terry's Texas Rangers by Jeffery D. Murrah. The letter is attractively framed along with the original transmittal envelope. Separation at the folds and light toning, else very fine.
