Description

Leo Tolstoy. Anna Karenina. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1886].
First edition, first printing of the American edition and first English language printing, preceding the first British edition. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Octavo. 769 pages plus Glossary and four pages of publisher's ads at end.

Publisher's original green buckram (the book was issued in blue, green & brown, with no established priority) with gilt lettering on cover and spine and a gilt Imperial House of Romanov seal on cover. Former owner's bookplate on front pastedown, additional owner's name penned on the second blank leaf. Some dampstaining to boards, wear and bumping to spine ends, board edges and corners. Hinge is loose but intact, four-inch tear to page eight, textblock is otherwise in fine condition. Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered this his first true novel. Overall, this is a very nice copy of the rare first issue.
