A personal and heartfelt typed letter signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt," Washington, D.C., September 22, 1941, 8vo, on The White House Washington letterhead, with original transmittal envelope, regarding the recent death of FDR's mother. FDR writes: "My dear Mrs. Karpf:/ I want you and the members of the Emma S. Haskell Club to know that I sincerely appreciate the kind expression of sympathy in my great loss, which your letter conveys. Such a thoughtful tribute to the memory of my Mother has touched me deeply./ Very sincerely yours,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." After Sara Delano Roosevelt died on September 7, 1941, Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in her newspaper column "My Day" that Sara's "strongest trait was loyalty to her family. . . . She was not just sweetness and light, for there was a streak of jealously and possessiveness in her when her own were concerned." This is a very personal note of thanks to Chicago's Emma S. Haskell Club following the death of his beloved Mother.
