A very interesting personal letter, sent the day after FDR was inaugurated President of the United States for the third time, a historic date, a one page, quarto, The White House Washington letterhead, January 21, 1941, to Mrs. Marian Johnson, wife of FDR's friend Aymar Johnson. FDR writes: "Dear Marian:/ Ever so many thanks for your letter of the nineteenth. It was good of you to write so generously and I hope I may continue to merit such high praise. It is letters like yours which lighten the tasks that lie ahead./ My affectionate greetings to you./ Always sincerely,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." Aymar Johnson was a classmate of FDR at Harvard University and a graduate of the class of 1905, FDR having graduated from Harvard the preceding year. At the Memorial Church of Harvard University, both FDR and Johnson are carved in stone on the World War II memorial which faces the altar of the church. The inscription of the memorial reads: "In Memory of Those Who Gave Their Lives in World War II." An interesting letter written right after FDR's historic third inauguration for President of the United States, in which there is also very interesting content: FDR refers to the "tasks ahead." By year's end the President would be embroiled in a world war on several continents. Other letters from FDR to Aymar Johnson, as well as the historic leather bound guest book with FDR's signature and inscription from Woodland, an estate that belonged to Aymar's father Bradish Johnson, and then to Aymar himself, located in East Islip, Long Island, are also part of this FDR Collection.
