Description

Drawing: "88me ½ Brigade en Egypte 1799-1801", c. 1850, ink and watercolor, 10.75" x 8.5", matted and framed to an overall size of 14.25" x 11.75". The unsigned ink drawing shows four soldiers from the 88th Demi-brigade; a Tambour [drummer]; a Sapeur [sapper]; a Grenadier, and, a Fusilier. The Demi-brigade was peculiar in that although its uniform coats were originally ordered to be scarlet, shortages of equipment caused them to be issued with violet colored coats. This drawing reflects that anomaly.

The 88th Demi-brigade was part of Napoleon's L'Armee de l'Orient. The 88th took part in the capture of Cairo and also in the Battle of the Pyramids the same year. When Bonaparte embarked upon his Syrian adventure, the 88th remained in Upper Egypt, and helped to tie down a much larger Turkish force for a sustained period. In 1801 the 88th was also part of the division dispatched to counter the British seizure of Alexandria.
