Description
L. C. Smith (Hunter Arms Company) Custom Double-Barrel Shotgun and Accessories in a Fitted Leather Case. 12 gauge. Serial number 200871. 30" Sir Joseph Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel barrels with tapered concave matte rib and ivory front and mid bead. Left barrel stamped "MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS CO FULTON, N.Y." About 7½ pounds in weight, 46½" overall length, FOP 13½" to a 1" Ithaca recoil pad, DAC 1¾", DAH 2½". Hunter One trigger. The case-colored action is engraved with intricate floral scrollwork with a hunting dog and waterfowl vignette in small oval borders on either side of the lock plate. Complimentary engraving appears on the blued trigger guard, rib extension, fore end and breech and tip of the barrels. There is a small gold border inlay at the tip of the rib extension on the barrel. The English walnut straight stock and horn-tipped fore end are finely checkered and a gold oval escutcheon on the underside of the stock is engraved with the name of a prior owner, "McKee". The stock has been fitted with a 1" Ithaca rubber recoil pad. The bores are mirror bright and the finish on the barrels remains strong. The wood, though showing signs of moderate use, has a warm, rich patina and excellent grain.Grading L. C. Smith shotguns of this period is an art unto itself. There is no grade mark to be found on this shotgun. It was obviously produced as a custom order, and besides the serial number, the only clues to production are the patent dates "JULY. 13.-86./ OCT. 5.- 86" on the water table and "EJECTOR/ PAT'D/ MAY. 28. 1901" on the underside of the fore end. This remarkable shotgun is offered in a period leather over oak compartmented case with leather strap closures and brass corners. The owner's name "McKee" is engraved on a brass plaque mounted to the lid. The green felt lined case contains several accessories including cleaning tools, a two-piece wood cleaning rod, Abercrombie & Fitch silver square oil bottle, and two 12 gauge Holland & Holland snap caps. The case is worn and the leather closure straps have been replaced, but the case remains in very good condition.
