THE APOLLO PROGRAM

Apollo 1 Unflown MS61 NGC Gold-colored Fliteline Medallion Originally from the Personal Collection of Crewmember Roger Chaffee, with Letter of Authenticity from His Widow. A 32mm medal featuring the mission insignia on the obverse which depicts a command/ service module flying over the southeastern United States. The moon is in the distance, symbolizing the program's eventual goal. The reverse has "WHITE GRISSOM CHAFFEE APOLLO 1" around; the center was left blank where the flight information would have been engraved after the mission. These never flew, but were prepared to go on the first Apollo mission with Gus Grissom, Ed White II, and Roger Chaffee who were all tragically killed in a training exercise fire. A beautiful Uncirculated example.

Included with this lot is a 2011-dated LOA on Wild Wind Ranch letterhead signed by Martha Chaffee stating, in full: "I certify that the Apollo 1 gold-colored Medallion that accompanies this letter is from the personal collection of my late husband Roger Chaffee."
