Description

Very Rare U.S./ C.S. 1.43 Inch Blunt Nosed Ellsworth Bolt. The small Ellsworth guns were one of the two types of breech loading artillery used during the American Civil War. The Ellsworth gun with the 1 1/2" bore had fifteen lands and grooves. The gun fired an 18 ounce iron conical ball wrapped with tallow soaked cord that was placed in the end of a brass cartridge. Fired by a three ounce powder charge, it was estimated that an Ellsworth had a range of up to three miles. During Lee's first invasion of the north, Confederate General "Stonewall" Jackson's men headed towards Harper's Ferry, capturing the town and many artillery pieces, including several Ellsworth guns. During the siege of Harper's Ferry, Captain Acorn of the 12th New York Militia took a detachment of Ellsworth guns to the Maryland Heights, where they rendered assistance in defense of the garrison, expending a few rounds before being captured. Most of the Ellsworth guns were sent to the Trans-Mississippi Theater, as well as South Carolina. This projectile is in excellent condition and was found above Harper's Ferry along the banks of the Potomac River. Very rare.
