Description
Very Rare Confederate Copy of a 2.20 Inch Schenkl Shell. This projectile was an attempt by the Confederate Arsenals to copy a Federal Schenkl projectile for use in the 2.25 inch Mountain Rifle. Often called a Harding pattern projectile, it conforms closely to a Schenkl pattern. This rare, non-excavated projectile is one of only two known to exist, the other is located in the West Point Museum. This shell was originally part of the Frankford Arsenal Museum located in Philadelphia, Pa. and it was sold when the museum closed sometime in the 1960s. The copper fuze adapter is smaller than that of the typical Confederate adapter. The leather washer is intact and completely unscrews. A thick copper band served as the sabot, the other shell at West Point has the sabot intact. A very rare projectile virtually never seen available on the market. Perfect condition.Auction Info
