Description
Colt SAA Caliber .22 RF, #1781 with LOA from Noted Single Action Authority John A. Kopec. Gun is overall generally smooth and gray with traces of blue on the straps, a few scattered dents on the frame and cylinder, and one small area of pitting on the frame at the rear of the barrel housing. Mechanically fine, good bore, excellent markings including three line patent markings on left side of frame, 22 - R. F. on the left side of the barrel, and 22 CAL on the left side of the trigger guard. Heavily worn Mexican eagle hard rubber grips that appear to be original to the gun. The accompanying factory letter states the gun was shipped July 13, 1888 to Western Arms & Cartridge Co. Salt Lake City, Utah. The caliber is listed as .22, blue finish, and 7 1/2" barrel, with a total of two guns in the shipment.Kopec's accompanying letter, dated March 20, 1985, states that he has personally examined and executed restoration on Colt .22 caliber revolver #1781. Kopec states that when he received the gun (from the consignor) the original 7 1/2" barrel had been replaced with a barrel section from an 1890 Winchester .22 rifle, the gun having been discovered in a fisherman's tackle box. Kopec further states, "the hammer firing pin and its apature (sic) in the frame were perfect however and in excelent (sic) original condition. I had about a year privious (sic) to the restoration of this revolver received with a lot of Colt barrels and cylinders an original contemporary 4 3/4" .22 caliber Colt barrel. The contemporary 4 3/4" barrel was fitted to this revolver." and "accounts for the difference in the barrel now in the revolver and what the Colt letter says the revolver was originally fitted (sic)." In conclusion Kopec states, "...this is a very rare example of a .22 caliber revolver and should be a proud possession of anyone who owns it."
Research has validated that less than 90 .44 Rimfire revolvers were converted to .22 caliber, and a search of Colt records has turned up only 18 .22 R. F. shipments, all in 1888, as was the case with this gun. Without question one of the rarest of all Colt Single Action variants, with this example being a fully documented legitimate restoration.
