Description
Apollo 7 Flown Beta Cloth Mission Insignia Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Walt Cunningham, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA and Signed Color Photo. This 9" square swatch features a color printed mission insignia, 3.75" x 3" in size, depicting a command service module, engine firing with the trail from that fire encircling a globe and extending out, symbolizing the Earth-orbital nature of the mission. The Roman numeral "VII" appears in the South Pacific Ocean and the crew's surnames appears on a wide arc at the bottom. It is signed beneath: "This patch was carried with me on Apollo 7/ Walt Cunningham/ Apollo 7". Included with this lot is a 10" x 8" color NASA litho photo with three images from the flight. Cunningham has added a handwritten notation to each: "A7 Liftoff", "L.O. + 3.0 Hrs", and "L.O. + 3 days" and has signed with his full name, all in bold black felt tip: "Ronnie Walter (Walt) Cunningham/ Apollo 7". The main purpose of this mission was to check out the Block II CSM, totally redesigned after the tragic Apollo 1 fire. Two uncommon and desirable items. Both excellent.Included in this lot is a signed Letter of Certification from Cunningham on his letterhead. It reads, in full: "This beta cloth emblem was carried on Apollo 7, the longest, most ambitious and most successful first manned test flight of any new flying machine.
"The original concept for our Apollo 7 mission patch was to depict a rocket rising from a ball of flame and to call it the Phoenix-Apollo rising from the ashes of the disastrous Apollo 1 fire. When NASA would not approve such a grim reminder of a critical failure, I sat down and sketched the version that NASA finally accepted. This design emphasized the earth orbital nature of the first manned Apollo mission. The circle represents the earth. The ellipse is the shape of all earth orbital flight paths. The ellipse was placed at an angle for aesthetic reasons but it has become a fairly reliable indicator of original patch design.
"This beta cloth patch flew 4,500,000 miles with me on the first manned Apollo mission, October 11- 22, 1968 and has been in my personal memorabilia collection ever since."
