Very Rare Cased Gen. George Meade Bronze Medallion. 3 1/8", 5/16" thick bronze medallion in the original fitted dark blue velvet lined, black Moroccan leather, case with small, brass hook for closure. Both case and medallion in pristine condition. Obverse with classical profile bust of Meade with, " Presented July 4th 1866 To Major Genl George G. Meade By The Union League of Philadelphia / As A Token Of The Gratitude Of His Countrymen" . Reverse with an exquisitely detailed depiction of Meade, in caped overcoat, presenting his sword to Columbia, who holds flag with pole surmounted by liberty cap, shield with American eagle at the base of her throne, in the process of presenting a laurel wreath to Meade. Die engraver's signature "Paquet. F." beneath the throne. Outer rim, "The Victor At Gettysburg, The Deliverer Of Our State, The Faithful Soldier Of Our Country July 1863" Listed as Julian-PE-20. A scarce medal in truly superb condition.
