Description
Union Soldier's Diary. Belonging to First Lieutenant Edwin J. Bailey, Co. C, 156th Regiment New York Infantry Volunteers, he gives a day by day account of army and civilian activity while stationed throughout Louisiana. He begins on January 1, 1863: "All quiet in camp..." An entry on January 7, originally written on and carried over from February 18, reads in part: "there was an order...by Gen Banks to persuade all the slaves to go back to their Masters and be paid wages that is any ting they wished to pay them for their labour..." Later, on May 4: "Capt [illegible] on Gen Banks staff was captured by Gurillas and murdered after he had given himself up as a prisoner Gen Banks has ordered to arrest 100 citizens for murdering Capt [illegible]..." Of the surrender of Vicksburg, he writes on July 7, in part: "...Gen Banks had read dispatch from Gen Grant that Vicksburgh surrendered July 4 10 AM with 25000 prisoners..." and the next day, July 8: "Port Hudson has fallen." The last full entry, dated September 12, is written from Buffalo, New York: "arrived at Middletown 6 ½ PM Hired Horse and Waggon to carry me home..."Some wear along the spine; foot of the spine has been chipped. Pages are in fine condition with some toning. Written in ink and pencil which is faded in parts. A fascinating look at Civil War Louisiana.
