Description
ANCIENT NEAR EAST. Circa 500 BCE - 500 CE. Stone game board and token. White stone rectangle, 5 X 3 inches (12.5 X 8 cm), pierced with five rows of three holes and a sixth row of four holes (19 total). Likely a form of Mancala, a game with obscure origins in Egypt that predate the Common Era and became popular throughout the Middle East and Africa. Together with a white stone ball of the same approximate vintage. From The Living Torah Museum Collection; acquired from Edward Shapira in Israel, December 2006, IAA export approval 3390.
Curiously, games or other forms of recreation are barely mentioned in either the Old or New Testaments, although survivals such as this point to their popularity in the ancient Near East.
