Description
Rare C. 1865-68 Series Of Five Carte-De-Visite Views Of Richmond, Va. By Selden & Co., Photographers, Richmond. All in very fine or better condition with Selden & Co. logos along with lengthy IDs of the subjects printed on verso. Interesting on all cards the address has been changed by hand in ink to "918" Main Street, Richmond, Va. from whatever the previous address on main Street was with them likely being forced to relocate after the destruction of the city by Federal forces. We are of the opinion that many of these images were, fact, taken, prior to the end of the war, based on the portions of the city depicted being intact, but printed at the end of the war or just slightly thereafter. All images list "Geo. O. Ennis" as photographer. Subjects are as follows: "View Of Richmond From Gamble's Hill"....; "Ruins Of The Arsenal, Richmond"......; "Dutch Gap Canal, James River".....; "Petersburg R. R. Bridge, Over James River".....; "Drury's Bluff, James River"..... We have never seen any of these views before and they clearly represent a very rare view of Richmond at or near the end of the war.Auction Info
