Description

The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Tombstone, Arizona: Postal Cover with a Remarkable History. Cancelled postal cover sent from Johnson, Arizona, to J. B. Neal, Tombstone, "Care of Sheriff Office," stamped November 2, 1908. The mining camp Johnson, now a Ghost Town, was established in Cochise County, Arizona, in April 1900. Although the cover, 5.5" x 3.5" is unremarkable, the history behind it is anything but. The letter was sent to Neal when he was serving time in the Cochise County Jail in Tombstone for killing a man who had been bullying him. He was acquitted of the charge of murder a month after this letter was received. The cover is stamped on the back "Tombstone Ariz. Nov 3" on back. There is jottings in pencil on the back of the cover, perhaps in the hand of Neal while he was spending his time in a Tombstone jail cell. The cover is in good condition.
