Description
The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection
Tombstone, Arizona: An Important July, 1881 Letter Referencing "Ike" Clanton and William "Billy" Lang. 2 pp. (docketed on reverse of page 2), 7.5" x 9.5", dated July 31, 1881, excellent condition. The writer, Mike Gray, addresses the Surveyor General based in Santa Fe, asking that a formal survey be made for the area near the "boot-heel" region of southwestern New Mexico where he had established a substantial ranch. He notes that "Issac Clanton has settled within one mile and is improving it as rapidly as he can with a view to a permanent home... ." Gray also references the neighboring spread settled by William ("Billy") Lang. Isaac "Ike" Clanton would of course be immortalized for his role in the events surrounding the O.K. Corral. Long was killed just two weeks later in the infamous Guadalupe Canyon Massacre, in which a presumed band of Mexican bandits stole a herd of 100 cattle on their way to Tombstone, killing several of those tending to the herd including N. H. "Old Man" Clanton, father of Ike and patriarch of the family.
The land settled by Gray, Clanton and others was at that point part of the Public Domain, and it was his hope that a proper survey would bring order to the process and encourage further settlement and improvement to the land. Gray closes his letter: "Please address me at Tombstone Cochise County, Arizona, that being the P.O. most convenient for me at this time."
The letter is docketed by the Surveyor on verso "Answered Aug 6/81, will have as soon as get more funds." A terrific documentation of the developments around tombstone at the very time of the O.K. Corral affair.
