Description
Canon de Chelly Orotone by Edward Curtis. Curtis was without a doubt the greatest photographer of Native Americans, and Canon de Chelly is among his most beautiful and haunting images. While Curtis did not invent the orotone or goldtone technique, he perfected it, and his orotones are his most valuable and sought-after works. To create an orotone, Curtis applied the image to the underside of the glass and then backed to with a solution which created the goldtone effect. Save for a tiny bit of emulsion flaking at the top, this example is in excellent display condition. However, there is a large shadow-like area of discoloration covering much of the lower righthand quadrant, and a small similar area in the lower lefthand corner (if one were not familiar with this work one might almost think they were intentional). The original Curtis frame was long ago replaced with a simpler style of frame. 15.25" x 12.25" as framed.Auction Info
