Description
DeWitt County Citizen's Petition Requesting an Election to Regarding Construction of the Gulf Western Texas and Pacific Railway. 2 pages, 8.5" x 14"; circa 1871. A draft prepared by the law firm of Stockdale & Proctor of Indianola; the petition reads in part: "The undersigned citizens and freeholders of said count of DeWitt and state of Texas respectfully petition your honorable court to order an election to take the opinion of the electors of said DeWitt County upon the Proposition that the said DeWitt County shall aid in the construction of the Gulf Western Texas and Pacific Railway, pursuant to 'an act of the Legislature of the State of Texas to authorize Counties, Cities and Towns to aid in the construction of Rail Roads, and other works of the Internal Improvement approved on the 12th of April 1870, from the town of Victoria to a point on the East side of the Guadalupe River in the County of DeWitt to be called Cuero and to be designated by the company at a distance not greater than three miles from the Clinton Ferry...'" A total of $100,000 is to be raised by subscription to bonds, each with a value of $1000. Although the petition is signed by twenty-one citizens, the petition is left undated suggesting that it was not the final one submitted. Signers include: William Grafton, J.J. Coulter, Thomas Eberhard, B.S. Milligan, John F. Collins, George W. Jacobs, et al.The Gulf Western and Pacific Railway was created by authorization of the Texas State legislature that consolidated the Indianola Railroad Company and the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railroad Company. The companies merged on April 22, 1871, and the newly formed entity was required to build a minimum of 30 miles of track per year north of Victoria, or be subject to cancellation of their charter. The company began work on extending the track into DeWitt County in April 1872, and it would reach the newly established town of Cuero referenced in the petition in March 1873. From the Robert E. Condition: Flattened folds, with light dampstaining at top margin not affecting any text. A few ink smears affecting several signatures.
