Description
Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-44) and Endeavour (STS-47) Flown "Space Shuttle Main Engine Project High Pressure Oxidizer Turbopump Turbine Blade Flown in Support of the Space Shuttle Program" in a Handsome Acrylic Pyramid. A flown part in a 6.5" x 2.25" x 2.25" display. Excellent.The Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is a highly complex and sophisticated piece of engineering that was designed to propel the Space Shuttle into orbit. One of the critical components of the SSME is the turbopump, which is responsible for supplying the engine's combustion chamber with the fuel and oxidizer needed for combustion at the proper pressures and flow rates. The SSME turbopump turbine blades are made of a directionally solidified (DS) nickel-base alloy called MAR-M-246. This alloy is very strong and heat-resistant, and it is able to withstand the harsh operating environment of the SSME turbopump. The turbopump, and by extension the turbine blades, are crucial for the proper and reliable operation of the SSME, ensuring that the Space Shuttle could be safely propelled into space.
