Description

Space Shuttle Orbiter: Large "Color Schlieren Flow Visualization" of Wind Tunnel "B" Testing at the von Karman Gas Dynamics Testing Facility, December 1980. A striking 19.75" x 15.75" color photo mounted to a 24" x 20" presentation matboard. The printed label beneath the photo at right gives the detailed information: "NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter, 2% Scale/ Tunnel B - Mach 8 - December, 1980". Handwritten at lower left: "Best Wishes from your friends at the VKF. Feb. 1982". Included with the lot is a modern color print of the viewing ports from a von Karman wind tunnel. Perfect for display. Creasing at top of mat could be matted out; photo is very fine.

The VKF (von Karman Facility) is the nation's largest aerospace ground test facility complex. Wind tunnel "B" is a 50-inch, closed-circuit hypersonic tunnel with a Mach number capability of 6 and 8; it primarily explores aerodynamic design. The VKF tested the Apollo vehicles from June 1962 to July 1966. Shuttle related testing began in the mid-1970s continuing through to supporting conclusions made by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board in the STS-107 aftermath.

Implementing Schlieren Flow Visualization in a wind tunnel setup requires a well-thought-out optical arrangement, typically including a light source, lenses or mirrors, and a camera. The setup allows the capture of high-resolution images and videos of the flow field, making the invisible air flow patterns visible, and providing a wealth of information for analysis and interpretation.
