Description

Apollo 10 Flown American Flag on Crew-Signed Presentation Certificate to Rooster Andrews, in Framed Display. A 5.75" x 3.75" silk U.S. flag lightly mounted to a 9" x 11" (sight size) certificate bearing small B&W photos of each astronaut and signed as follows: "Tom Stafford", "John Young", and "Gene Cernan/ To Rooster Andrews/ Our sincere & personal/ Best Wishes/ The Crew of Apollo X". Beautifully quadruple-matted using red, white, and blue, and framed to an overall 16" x 18". All the writing is uniformly faded but quite visible; the flag has small, very light, glue bleedthrough at the corners but is bright and crisp. A perfect match to the Apollo 9 flag also in this auction. Very fine.

William Edward "Rooster" Andrews was a University of Texas football team manager who became famous as a drop-kicking player, dubbed by the media as the "All-American Waterboy." He later opened a local sporting goods store and was the one who developed the now-iconic "Longhorn" logo and changed the team's uniform color to burnt orange. He was an avid fan of the Space program and became friends with the astronauts who often presented him with flown items to display in his store (this the fading on the signatures).
