Description
Apollo 10 Flown MS66 NGC Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 18, Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan, with Signed Letter of Certification. This 29mm x 31mm sterling silver shield-shaped medal was one of 300 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, with crewmembers Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. The medallions stayed with Young aboard the Command Module Charlie Brown while Stafford and Cernan flew the Lunar Module Snoopy to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface on a full-scale dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a large Roman numeral "X" on the moon with the command and lunar modules preparing to rendezvous. Earth is visible in the background. The reverse has the engraved mission dates along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A desirable Gem Uncirculated example from a mission crewmember.Included with this lot is a 2016-dated signed Letter of Certification from Gene Cernan on his letterhead. It reads, in part: "THIS IS TO CERTIFY that the accompanying - Apollo X Robbins Medallion #18 - was flown into lunar orbit in May, 1969 aboard our command module "Charlie Brown" on the second manned mission to the Moon. I carried this Apollo X Robbins medallion in my Personal Preference Kit (PPK) during Apollo X's journey to lunar orbit in May of 1969. On May 26, 1969, just prior to our reentry back through the Earth's atmosphere, our Apollo X crew set the world record for the fastest speed ever obtained by a human of 28,547 miles per hour. This speed record still stands. During the Apollo Program, NASA's policy allowed each astronaut to keep both personal effects and disposable equipment from their flights, as personal mementos. I chose to include this flown Apollo X Robbins medallion within my personal collection, since it was returned to me in December of 1972. This medallion is both an historic relic of mankind's first lunar journeys as well as a fully documented lunar orbit artifact returned to the Earth from the Moon."
