Description

Major Albert H. Crews U.S. Air Force MA-1 Flight Jacket, Directly from His Estate. An original U.S. Air Force MA-1 flight jacket, intermediate weight, manufactured of sage-green nylon with wool-and-cotton lining, featuring a brass front zipper, two slant pockets with snap closures, and knit waistband, collar, and cuffs. Interior manufacturer's label reads: "JACKET, FLYING, MAN'S INTERMEDIATE, TYPE MA-1/ SIZE: LARGE/ STOCK NO. 8415-273-3971/ ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC./ DRY CLEAN ONLY/ 58% WOOL / 42% COTTON/ U.S. PROPERTY." A black leather name tag with gold-stamped wings and text is sewn above the left breast pocket:"AL CREWS/ MAJOR". The MA-1 flight jacket was the standard-issue Air Force cold-weather flying jacket throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Manufactured by several contractors (including Albert Turner & Co. and Alpha Industries), it was widely worn by military and test pilots, and by the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) astronauts selected in 1965. Major Albert H. "Al" Crews was one of those original MOL astronauts, assigned as a pilot in the classified Air Force space program intended to deploy manned reconnaissance laboratories in Earth orbit. Following MOL's cancellation in 1969, Crews transferred to NASA, where he became a research pilot and later participated in the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Test (ALT) program at Dryden in the late 1970s. Please see other material from the Crews estate in this auction. Heavy wear to cuffs and neck, overall very good.
