Description

Charlie Duke Signed Large Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Color Photo. A 20" x 16" satin finish color photo on Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper of Duke at Plum Crater, signed in blue felt tip: "Charlie Duke/ Apollo 16". Very fine.

Plum Crater itself, situated within the Descartes Highlands on the lunar surface, presented a unique opportunity for scientific inquiry. By analyzing the lunar regolith (soil) samples collected from this location, scientists aimed to unravel the geological history of the moon and gain insights into its formation and evolution. Charlie Duke's meticulous soil sampling efforts at Plum Crater yielded a treasure trove of invaluable scientific data. By carefully selecting and documenting samples from various depths and locations within the crater, Duke provided researchers on Earth with a firsthand glimpse into the lunar subsurface. Initially, it was believed that the highlands were volcanic in origin. However, the samples collected at Plum Crater revealed that they primarily consist of impact-formed rocks (breccias), which was a groundbreaking scientific discovery. This discovery challenged existing hypotheses and significantly contributed to our knowledge of lunar geology.
