Engraved Pair of French Salon Percussion Pistols by Matheu & Gunther, Paris. .50 caliber, 8-inch rifled octagonal damascus barrels, the top flats with gold-inlaid legend reading: Matheu & Gunther 'a Paris. Dovetailed front sights. Scroll-engraved breechblocks, tangs, hammers and lockplates. Lock languets marked: Matheu/& Gunther/'a Paris. Varnished stocks with fluted grips and deep relief-carved scrolled fore-ends. Scroll-engraved steel furniture, including spurred triggerguards and raised gripcaps. Both contained in an associated English walnut burgundy upholstered partitioned case, the lid with inlaid vacant rectangular brass escutcheon. Condition: Both are very good, showing light age wear and patina overall. Associated case showing heavy wear with marks to exterior, fading and fraying to interior.
