Description
E. Richard Gordon
Richard Gordon's Owned and Used Coverall Anti-Blackout Suit
Cutaway Type Z-3 (G-Suit) from His Days as a Navy Test Pilot Flying
F-4H Phantoms, Directly from His Family Collection, with
Certificate of Authenticity. A very interesting cutaway version
of the standard Anti-Blackout suits as used from World War II
through Vietnam. The tag states: "Coverall, Anti-Blackout/ Cutaway,
Type Z 3/ R8475-264-2056-LF50/ Size Small Short/ N383-*61823A/
Seymour Wallas & Co/ Property of U.S. Government". We located an
article from Naval Air News Dated September 1, 1945, titled
"New Cutaway Type G Suits Go To Pilots" (copy included). It shows
three photos of a pilot putting one on and explains a lot about
them, including (in part): "The z-3 suit is of similar design to
the standard Army suit, with some improvements. It weighs less than
1½ lbs... The Z-3 suit is made of the working parts of the coverall
types Z-1 and -2 and consists of separate calf, thigh and abdominal
elements connected together... Quick adjustable laces are provided,
as these suits must be fitted more snugly to the body (to insure
protection against grey-out and black-out) than is necessary for
the Z-2 coverall. The same provisions for oral inflation to provide
accessory flotation in water are incorporated- quick-release
zippers for the legs and an oral inflation valve for plugging into
the male quick disconnect." A first-time offering for us, should
appeal to Space, Aviation, and Militaria collectors alike. Included
with the lot is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Gordon's
son and estate trustee Lawrence Gordon, CAPT, USN (ret). Shows wear
from use, very good.
