Description

Ex. John Young

Apollo 16 Flown Embroidered AB Emblem Mission Insignia Crew Patch Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. This 4.125" diameter round patch flew with crewmembers John Young, Ken Mattingly, and Charlie Duke aboard the Apollo 16 command module, April 16-27, 1972. The design for this insignia features an eagle with outstretched wings atop a red, white, and blue shield, all above the lunar surface. The NASA logo element vector symbol is across the shield on which is written "APOLLO 16". The blue border contains sixteen silver stars and the surnames of the crew; it is surrounded by a bright yellow border. A rare opportunity to acquire the two different flown patches (see adjacent lot) in one auction. Excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the Apollo 16 'AB EMBLEM' Embroidered Mission patch that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 16 mission April 16-27, 1972. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag package is sealed with a holographic tamper-proof label, #1733176, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
