Description

Apollo 11 Crew-Signed "Type Three" Mission Emblem Cachet Insurance Cover. A philatelic cover featuring a color mission insignia cachet with the 6¢ "Apollo 8" stamp (Scott #1371) affixed and bearing a pictorial machine cancellation from Kennedy Space Center dated July 16, 1969, the day that Apollo 11 was launched. To the right are the neat felt tip signatures in blue felt tips: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". A perfect display piece with the crew's signatures and the familiar mission insignia. Original mission card stiffener included. Excellent.

Apollo 11 was the first flight in which insurance covers were utilized. They were produced for the crew to sign together before their launch to the moon, and then leave behind with their families as a form of insurance that could be sold should they fail to return. This is one of three "types" of Apollo 11 covers. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
