Description

Apollo 10 Flown Georgia Flag Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. A 6.125" x 3.875" cloth Georgia state flag that flew to the moon on the all-important Apollo 10 mission, the "dress rehearsal" for the upcoming Apollo 11 landing, with Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. This is the version of the Georgia flag from the 1956 to 2001 era which incorporates the Confederate Battle Flag. It has since been updated. This and a later lot are the first flown Georgia state flags Heritage has ever offered, appropriate since Young spent part of his childhood there and graduated from Georgia Tech. Light creasing, otherwise excellent.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the flag of the STATE OF GEORGIA that accompanies this letter was flown to the Moon aboard the Apollo 10 mission May 18-26, 1969. It has been a part of John W. Young's personal collection since returning from the mission. The flag has a holographic tamper-proof label attached, #1733186, to ensure authenticity, that will display a residual honeycomb design without number if removed."
