Description

Apollo 11 Complete Flown Heat Shield Ablative Plug #56 in Acrylic Display Directly from the Dr. Rocco Petrone Family Collection. A 1.375" diameter x 2.125" long threaded plug from the aft heat shield with metal cap and RTV O-ring intact. It is ensconced in a 3" diameter x 3" tall cylinder with "Apollo 11/ July 16-24, 1969" engraved on the bottom. The top of the plug is charred as expected and plate on the bottom has "#47" scratched out and "56" added representing its inclusion in the aft shield of the Apollo 11 command module, the first lunar landing. Heritage has recently sold two of these, from Chris Kraft and Kenneth Kleinknecht, for $31,250 and $32,500 respectively (they both included original wooden bases). Rare and very desirable. Light wear, some scratches could possibly be buffed out. Fine.

The Command Module heatshield protects the astronauts during fiery re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. The Apollo heatshield uses 59 bolts to attach the shield to the spacecraft and a plug is placed in the ablative material to cover and protect the bolts. Each plug is uniquely numbered on the bottom, identifying which bolt it is designed to cover. After the mission, all plugs are cored out of the heatshield so that the shield may be removed and inspected by engineers and technicians.
