THE PERSONAL COLLECTION OF FRED HAISE
Flown Sterling Silver Robbins Medallions from Apollo Missions 7
Through 12, in Custom Acrylic Display, Directly from the Personal
Collection of Fred Haise, with Signed Letter of Authenticity.
An exceptional collection of coveted flown Robbins medallions from
the first six successful Apollo missions. Each has been
professionally encased in a 6" x 3.75" x .75" acrylic display that
showcases the beauty of each mission insignia. As follows.Apollo 7 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 215. This 32mm x 24mm sterling silver medal was one of only 255 flown aboard Apollo 7, the first manned mission in the Apollo program, October 11-22, 1968, with crewmembers Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and Walt Cunningham. This mission accomplished many firsts including the first manned launch of the Saturn IB launch vehicle, and the first three-man American space launch. Designed by Allen Stevens of Rockwell International, the insignia features a command/service module with its engine firing, orbiting the Earth. The reverse features the date of the launch, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks.
Apollo 8 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 215. This sterling silver 38mm x 30mm triangular-shaped medal was one of 300 flown on Apollo 8, December 21-27, 1968, into lunar orbit with crewmembers Borman, Lovell, and Anders. The James Lovell designed insignia features a figure-eight loop around the Earth and moon, symbolizing the mission's flight path and objectives. The surnames of the crew appear at the bottom of the figure-eight. Haise and Lovell would fly together years later on Apollo 13. The reverse has the engraved dates of the mission, serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. These three men were the first ever to escape Earth's gravity and to see the "dark side of the moon."
Apollo 9 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 286. This 25mm sterling silver medal was one of 350 flown aboard Apollo 9, March 3-13, 1969, in the first space test of the complete Apollo spacecraft that included the third piece of Apollo hardware- the lunar module. The three-man crew consisted of Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott, and Rusty Schweickart. The obverse is based on the mission insignia, featuring a Saturn V rocket with the letters USA on it. To its right, an Apollo CSM is shown next to a LM; the CSM is trailing rocket fire in a circle around the Roman numerals "IX". The reverse features the dates of the mission, names of the crew, the serial number, and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks.
Apollo 10 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 227. This 29mm x 31mm sterling silver shield-shaped medal was one of 300 flown to the moon on Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, with crewmembers Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. The medallions stayed with Young aboard the Command Module Charlie Brown while Stafford and Cernan flew the Lunar Module Snoopy to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface on the last, full-scale dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing. The obverse of the medal features a large 3-D Roman numeral "X" on the moon's surface as the CSM orbits the moon while the LM flies up from its low pass; the reverse has the engraved mission dates along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks.
Apollo 11 Flown Sterling Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 129. This 28mm medal was one of 450 flown aboard Apollo 11, the first manned moon landing, July 16-24, 1969, with crewmembers Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin. The obverse depicts Collins' early and original concept for the mission insignia with the eagle carrying an olive branch in its mouth. NASA thought the sharp, open talons of the eagle looked too "warlike" and the olive branch, representing peace, was moved to the claws. This is one of, if not the only, major official items that renders the insignia as it was meant to be by the astronaut designer. The reverse has the dates of the mission, surnames of the crew, and the serial number.
Apollo 12 Flown Sterling Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 177. This 32mm sterling silver medal is one of 262 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 12, November 14-24, 1969, with crewmembers Conrad, Gordon, and Bean. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a clipper ship arriving at the moon (it was an all-Navy crew), trailing fire and flying the U.S. flag. There are four stars in the background, one each for the three astronauts who flew the mission and one for Clifton Williams who was killed on October 5, 1967, during a training flight. He had been assigned to the back-up crew for what would be the Apollo 9 mission and would have most likely been assigned as lunar module pilot for Apollo 12. The reverse has the dates of the mission along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks.
Robbins medallions have historically been among the most coveted items for collectors of space exploration artifacts. This display is an incredibly unique opportunity to obtain six flown examples directly from a significant figure in the Apollo program. A likely one of a kind item as Haise had these encapsulated in the custom display personally. Some light surface scratching. Very fine.
