SOVIET SPACE PROGRAM
The flight of Ivan Ivanovich and Chernushka

Vostok: General Nikolai Kamanin's Map for Vostok 3KA-1 Landing with Site Marked, Signed in Russian on Verso. A one-of-a-kind 17" x 22.5" color general staff map on which Kamanin has marked the landing site of the first man-rated Vostok spacecraft 3KA-1, which occurred on March 9, 1961, carrying a mannequin dubbed Ivan Ivanovich (who wore a functioning SK-1 spacesuit) and the famous space dog Chernushka. This map is signed on the verso: "Flight of the spacecraft 'Vostok'/ 9.3.61/ The landing point was on the target/ N Komanin/ 9.3.61".

Nikolai P. Kamanin was head of the Soviet space program and one of the most famous pilots of Soviet aviation history. He was one of the first military heroes of the Soviet Union and holder of the Hero Gold Star #3. He also became a greatly decorated World War II hero and, because of this, was assigned command of the first Cosmonaut Corps for the Soviet Union.

The two unmanned missions immediately preceding the first manned flight used the same spacecraft design as in the manned missions, a design called Vostok 3KA. The approval of a manned mission was contingent upon the success of the two automated Vostok 3KA missions. The first of these unmanned flights, 3KA-1, was launched on March 9, 1961. This map, then, is the first "Landing Map of the first Man rated Spacecraft" and it's landing location. Original folds, excellent.

This map is an official Soviet-government "General Staff" map of the territory that comprised the landing area of the first man-rated Vostok 3KA-1, marked with a red plus in a red circle. Underlined in red is the nearest city (Zainsk). These maps were top secret military maps and, if found in unauthorized hands, could result in immediate arrest for sabotage (or worse). From an important collection of Soviet-era Space history
