Description
Confederate Signal Corps Blockade Runner Album: Gen. John George Walker. Rare vignette portrait of Confederate General John George Walker. Wears double breasted frock coat with buttons in groups of three. General's insignia on standup collar. Walker served as a Brigadier General under Jackson and Longstreet, before commanding a Texas division known as "Walker's Greyhounds" because of their speed and agility. Walker commanded the 8th Texas Cavalry early in the war and was promoted to Brigadier General in early 1862, serving in the Peninsula Campaign and was wounded at Malvern Hill. He subsequently served under Longstreet at South Mountain and Antietam. Promoted to Major General in November 1862, he was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department, commanding a division of 12 Texas regiments. He served in the department through numerous engagements to the end of the war when he fled to Mexico where he remained for several years. After his return he served with the U. S. Diplomatic Service. Backmark of "Blessing's / Gallery / Houston / Texas". A few minor wrinkles in the albumen paper at the upper right not affecting image, else excellent, very bright and crisp.
