Description

General William Tecumseh Sherman Photograph Twice Signed. 7.5" x 13" with photographer's imprint (Napoleon Sarony of New York) in lower margin below the image. This is one of the last images of Sherman, taken just three years before his death. In the lower margin, the aging general has signed, "W. T. Sherman / General, 1888." On the reverse, he has inscribed, "To Maj. General John W. Fuller / of Toledo, Ohio / with best compliments of / W. T. Sherman / General / New York, Sept. 22, 1888." Sherman had retired five years earlier as Commanding General of the U.S. Army. The image is in very good condition, save for a stain along the upper edge. Light mat burn and paper remnants on the verso, none affecting the inscription.
