1937-1938 Hughes Court
Charles E. Hughes Supreme Court Photo Signed by Eight Justices. 12" x 11.25". A Harris & Ewing studio portrait of the court posed in their robes and signed in the wide bottom margin: George Sutherland, James C. McReynolds, Charles E. Hughes, Louis D. Brandeis, Pierce Butler, Harlan F. Stone, Owen J. Roberts, and Hugo L. Black. Justice Benjamin Cardozo is also pictured, but does not sign. Cardozo suffered a heart attack in late 1937, and a few months later, a stroke. He was inactive through much of the 1937-1938 Supreme Court session; and passed away on July 9, 1938.Condition: Slight silvering to the albumen, and a few scuff marks to the surface. The Brandeis and Roberts signatures have faded a bit, and there is a chip missing at top right well away from the image. Ideal for framing.
