Description

[Lincoln Assassination]. Photograph: Execution of the Conspirators. Measuring 4" x 2.5", this sepia toned photograph, dated July 7, 1865, shows the bodies of four of the Lincoln conspirators, Mary Surratt (at left in the black dress), Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt, hanging from the gallows in the yard of Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. Scottish photographer Alexander Gardner, whose backstamp appears on the verso, captured the scene as a crowd of spectators, both civilian and military, look on from the yard and the wall behind. Light waterstaining around the edges does not affect the photograph.
