Description

[George Armstrong Custer]. Stereoview: Lt. Washington, a Confederate Prisoner, and Capt. Custer, U.S.A. 6.75" x 3.25". In this May 31, 1862, Gardner & Gibson photograph, taken near Fair Oaks, Virginia, Custer is seen sitting on a box leaning on his left knee. To his right sits Lt. James B. Washington, a member of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's staff and an old classmate and friend of Custer's who had likely been taken at the Battle of Seven Pines. Between the legs of Washington sits a small black boy. This is a variant of a more well-known photograph of the two men. Identified on the verso as Photographic Incidents of the War, No. 428. Fine.

According to D. Mark Katz's Custer in Photographs, page 6, "A camp photographer, seeing the two seated on a log, chatting, was preparing to photograph them, when young Washington called out to a small darkey standing near, and placed the child between them, saying the picture ought to be called 'Both sides, the cause.' And so it appeared in Harper's Weekly."
