Description

William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan:Three Chalk Billikens, 1908. 4.5" and 2.75". The three figures feature two of William Howard Taft and one of William Jennings Bryan. The Billiken was the creation of Ms. Florence Pretz of St. Louis, Missouri, who said she saw the mysterious figure in a dream. In 1908 she patented the Billiken who was elf-like with pointed ears, a mischievous smile, and a tuft of hair on his pointed head. His arms were short and he was generally sitting with his legs stretched out in front of him. The Billiken was auspiciously named and could be applied to the two candidates for president of the United States in 1908, William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan. The largest Taft figure is gold painted and very fine. The smaller Taft has a few light chips, thus fine. The Bryan is missing much of the finish and is rough to the touch, else near fine.
