Description

Edward S. Curtis: Two Volumes of "The North American Indian". This lot consists of volume six and another volume dated 1935, both disbound, but apparently complete. The 1911 volume was part of a proposed edition of 500. It contains 75 small format photogravures (9 1/2" x 12 1/2" overall) on Van Gelder Zonen paper after photographs by Curtis of the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Piegan tribes. Most of the photogravures have tissue-paper barriers attached along one edge. Published by the Plimpton Press of Norwood, Massachusetts. The 1935 volume contains a list of the illustrations contained in the 1911 work plus text. The frontispiece is a full-color photogravure on tissue paper captioned "Navel - Amulets - Piegan". There are a solid $8,000 worth of images here.

The color frontispiece is, in fact, part of Volume Six from 1911.
