Description

First Edition Two-Volume Set of Jefferson Davis' The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Inscribed by the Author To Edgar Howard Farrar (1849-1922). A beautiful two-volume set rebound in a contemporary manner with speckled-calf boards with titles stamped in gilt on morocco labels on the spine and marbled endpapers. The octavo volumes were published by D. Appleton & Company, New York in 1881. There are illustrations and folding maps in each volume. Davis has inscribed the first volume on the flyleaf "E. H. Farrar Esq. / with respects of the / author". The bindings show but minimal shelf wear; the contents are generally bright with some occasional foxing and browning to the pages. Edgar Howard Farrar was a prominent New Orleanian who married Lucinda Davis Stamps, one of the daughters of Isaac Davis Stamps, Jefferson Davis' nephew.
