Group of Two William Bowman Autograph Letters Signed with H. W. William Autograph Letter Signed. Three letters relating to two prevailing ophthalmologists of the nineteenth century. Includes:Sir William Bowman Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 4" x 6", 5 Clifford St, London; February 6, 1882. In this letter addressed to a Dr. Thomson, Bowman thanks him for his letter and photograph and discusses some volumes Thomson should be receiving soon and hopes he will be pleased with them. Signed, "W Bowman." Stain to first page. Pencil notation under signature.
Sir William Bowman Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 4" x 6", 5 Clifford St, London; January 4, 1883. In this letter addressed to a "Jackson" he agrees to see their ward and writes discussing which time would be more convenient to visit. Signed, "W Bowman." Smoothed crease with small stain to recto. Pencil notation to recto and verso. Some separation at fold.
Sir William Bowman (1816-1892) was an English surgeon, ophthalmologist, and histologist. He is most famous for his microscopic investigation of various organs and tissues. The Bowman's capsule was identified, and later named after him, when he recognized it was an important component of the nephron. Once he focused on ophthalmology he founded the Ophthalmological Society. He was amongst the first to describe several eye structures including the Bowman's membrane. By the time he was made a baronet in 1884 he was regarded as one of the most preeminent eye surgeons in England.
H. W. Williams Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Boston, Massachusetts; December 1, 1881. In this letter to an unnamed doctor, Williams writes that he is sending him a copy of his new book and thanks him for allowing him permission to use his illustrations and descriptions "...of the mode of testing for color blindness..." Signed, "H. W. Williams." Smoothed mailing folds with pencil notation to verso.
Dr. Henry Willard Williams (1821-1895) was an American physician and ophthalmologist. He was the first American to focus exclusively on ophthalmology. Williams taught the first course on clinical ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in 1850 and founded the American Ophthalmological Society in 1864. In 1871 was made Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology.
