Description
Friedrich Wöhler Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4.5" x 8.75", Gottengen, Germany; April 19, 1868. Letter to mathematician Mortiz Abraham Stern in German, untranslated.Friedrich Wöhler (1800-1882) was a German chemist best known for this work in inorganic and organic chemistry. He was the first to isolate the chemical elements of beryllium and yttrium in their pure metallic form. While Hans Christian Ørsted was the first to isolate aluminum, Wöhler developed a system in 1827 to produce the first sample of pure aluminum. A year later he described, for the first time, the "Wöhler synthesis" of urea, which was the process of converting ammonium cyanate into urea in a laboratory. This discovery marked the beginning of organic chemistry and the decline of the vitalism school of thought.
