Description
Thomas N. Waul Letter Signed with Postscript Signed with Initials. Two pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 10"; "Camp Waul near Brenham, Texas;" July 9, 1862. Commander of Waul's Legion writes to General Earl Van Dorn reporting he is ready to receive orders and requesting arms for his men. Waul had organized Waul's Legion a few months earlier in May and was eager to join Van Dorn's forces. He writes: "I have written to you on several occasions before, reporting my command & have expected to receive orders, however awaiting only to secure proper transportation, and as this is now nearly ready I shall soon take up the march for Little Rock Arks... These Art[iller]y Companies together with the balance of the unarmed companies I trust if possible you will have armed on this side of the Mississippi but with or without arms if you will so direct me I will bring the command over to you... My command is admitted by all to be well disciplined and Col Webb who received and inspected us adds that it is the finest body of men that he has inspected in the state." Signed, "T. N. Waul."In a postscript, Waul asks that Van Dorn transmit orders "by different persons on various routes" and signs with his initials. Filing dockets on verso.
Condition: Flattened folds, with heavy spots of foxing affecting the legibility of a few words. Waul's signatures are unaffected. Verso has heavy soiling and staining.
